SKIO Music
ONLINE COLLABORATION PLATFORM
Redefining how the music industry approaches collaboration, licensing, and monetization by embedding legal, financial, and creative systems into a single platform.
Project Overview
The music industry is notoriously complex. For decades, legal costs and fragmented workflows have limited creative freedom. Contracts often take weeks to finalize, and trust between collaborators remains fragile.
SKIO Music was founded to solve these bottlenecks. Our vision was to build a “creator-first” platform where artists could collaborate, license, and monetize their work with legal protections built directly into the process.
My Role
Product Lead
Aug 2015 – Dec 2019
I helped lay the foundation for this global transformation. Initially joining as a product designer, I grew into the strategic driver of innovation. I defined the platform’s vision, built scalable systems, and led cross-functional teams. My work positioned SKIO as a long-term reimagining of how the music industry operates, moving it from fragmented tools to a unified ecosystem.
The Problem
Creative and legal workflows in music were slow and inaccessible to most creators. Without a central system, artists struggled with legal delays and costly processes. We needed to create a platform that provided professional-grade legal and financial security without stifling the creative spirit.
The Team
I led a diverse group including musicians, developers, producers, and entertainment attorneys. This unique mix of talent allowed us to align creative needs with strict legal requirements.
My Methods
To understand the industry's deep-rooted issues, I used ethnographic research. I embedded myself in the community, conducting interviews in recording studios to observe real-world workflows. I also utilized MVP prototyping and iterative service design to refine the platform’s core value.
Exploration & Discovery
User Mapping
I documented 12+ user roles, from DJs to label reps, each with distinct goals but common frustrations.
Identifying Pain Points
Documented systemic pain points: legal delays, lack of trust, costly processes, and fragmented tools
The Guiding Principle
Every design decision was focused on providing creators the freedom to create and share on their own terms.
UX Design Process
The challenge was balancing creative freedom with legal accuracy. My approach focused on fast validation and scalable design to build credibility in a skeptical industry.
Prototypes & Demos
I created clickable flows used to test features directly with artists and secure investor buy-in.
MVP Strategy:
We released lightweight versions of contracts to prove demand before scaling the full system.
User Testing
Constant sessions with users helped us simplify complex legal and payment flows.
Accessibility
We prioritized clarity so that financial steps felt approachable for creators without a legal background.
Design System
I built a complex component-based system that unified dozens of
entities – including profiles, wallets, and contracts – into one consistent framework.
This modular library supported rapid iteration across the entire platform.

The Global Ecosystem
The SKIO Music ecosystem is a vertically integrated marketplace and collaboration hub designed to modernize the music industry’s legal and creative workflows. It serves as a bridge between creators and content owners, replacing slow, manual paperwork with automated licensing agreements and royalty split sheets.
By centralizing digital asset management, secure payments, and a global social community, the platform creates a “protected environment” where music can be remixed and monetized without the risk of copyright takedowns.
Talent Marketplace
For the individual creator, the Talent Marketplace functions as a career-launching engine and professional networking tool. It provides producers and artists with legal access to high-quality song stems from major labels and “Pros,” allowing them to build an official portfolio and gain visibility through A&R feedback.
Beyond access to content, it offers a collaborative space where talent can find partners, negotiate customized contract terms via simple sliders, and manage their professional EPK (Electronic Press Kit) and social presence within a single dashboard.
Content Marketplace
The Content Marketplace is tailored for labels, managers, and rights holders seeking to scale their catalog’s reach and generate new revenue. It allows content owners to upload masters and stems, set specific remix terms, and leverage SKIO’s automated legal interface to handle thousands of micro-licenses instantly.
This system transforms passive catalogs into active assets by encouraging User-Generated Content (UGC), providing labels with detailed fanbase analytics and a streamlined way to discover and sign emerging talent from a global pool.
Contests
The Remix and Original Song Contests serve as the ecosystem’s primary engagement driver, offering high-stakes opportunities for discovery and marketing.
These contests allow artists like The Chainsmokers or Clean Bandit to activate their fanbases, resulting in millions of impressions and thousands of high-quality remixes.
For participants, these competitions provide a “no-gatekeeping” path to industry attention, where winners can secure official releases on major labels, high-end production gear, and direct recognition from world-class A&Rs.
Final Design Direction
The SKIO platform was never meant to be a simple collection of features. Instead, it was an ecosystem designed to solve the structural problems of music collaboration. We focused on creating a seamless environment where technical and legal steps felt invisible to the artist.

Impact & Results
Leading SKIO was unlike any project I’ve worked on before.
It was a test of endurance, vision, and adaptability.
While SKIO was still growing when I transitioned out, the impact of the foundation we built was undeniable.
Most importantly, SKIO proved that with the right foundation,
it’s possible to give creators something the industry has always resisted:
the freedom to create, share, and thrive on their own terms.
Efficiency Gains
Automated split sheets reduced contract turnaround from weeks to under 10 minutes
Adoption
Most of collaborations used SKIO’s built-in legal tools within the first year
Validation
Grammy-winning producers and major artists endorsed and participated, giving SKIO credibility in a skeptical industry
